I love that Best Buy supports events they believe are important to their employees, customers, and communities. One such occasion is the upcoming Lunar New Year.
Lunar New Year refers to the first day of a secular, sacred or other year whose months are coordinated the cycles of the moon. It is a time of entertaining with family, celebrations, fireworks, and gift-giving. It is a 15-day holiday that begins on the first day of a new moon and ends with the full moon on the day of the Lantern Festival.
The Lunar New Year is based on the lunar year, so the date of Chinese New Year changes every year. The Chinese calendar follows a 12-year pattern with each year named after an animal.
One story that explains it is that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited all of the animals to join him for a New Year celebration, but only 12 animals turned up. So to reward those animals that did attend, Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived, starting with the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
I am the Dragon, by the way.
For Asians all around the world, including Asian-Americans, Lunar New Year not only celebrates the beginning of the year but also the ending of winter and the anticipated arrival of spring. It is one of the most important holidays celebrated in Asian countries.
This coming year it falls on February 19th, 2015 of our Gregorian calendar. Best Buy is helping celebrate the event with an Asian-inspired Giftcard and eGiftcard, available for purchase or gifting from BestBuy.com through February 22nd, 2015.
To have a giftcard shipped to your address, follow this link. For an eGiftcard that can be emailed to whomever you want to receive it, scroll to the right of this eGiftcard link. I love the red and gold colors and the koi fish, of course.
